6 Critical Mistakes That Cause Disappointment in Transfer Print Orders (and How to Avoid Them)
Why You Must Read This Guide
You should make a checklist before giving transfer print order. Here are the points. A small mistake in a transfer print order can lead to hundreds of dollars in wasted fabric and garments. A bad order is the most expensive order.
This guide, built on our 20+ years of industry experience, will eliminate the “trial and error” and ensure you get professional results on the first try.
1. The Critical Mistake: Ignoring Fabric & Print Compatibility
This is the foundation of your order. You must tell us what your fabric is:
- Is it Polyester? Cotton? An elastane blend?
- Is it a high-stretch fabric (like for leggings)?
- What is the fabric weight (e.g., fleece, single jersey)?
This information determines which ink, which temperature, and which press pressure we must use. If you use a cotton print on a polyester fabric, the result will be a disaster.

2. Not Defining the Need: Which Print Type is Right for You?
Every print type serves a purpose:
- 💧 Water-Based: When breathability and a soft hand-feel are the priority (babywear, organic cotton). You can check here our water-based transfer printing post.
- 🤸 Silicone: When you require high elasticity (sportswear, leggings), superior wash resistance, and functional effects like “non-slip.” Click here for more details about silicone transfer printing post.
- 📸 DTF (Direct-to-Film): The most budget-friendly and fast solution for photo-quality, multi-color, complex designs, or low-quantity jobs. For better understanding DTF printing click here.

3. The Hidden Enemy: The “Problematic Fabrics” Trap
This is the biggest cost trap in the industry. Sometimes, the fabric itself is treated to prevent a print from adhering.
🚨 RED ALERT CHECKLIST:
- Silicone-Based Emulsions: These “softeners” are used to give fabric a soft feel, but they block the print from bonding to the fibers.
- Water-Repellent Finishes: If the fabric has been treated to be water-repellent, it will also “repel” the ink.
- Low-Quality Polyester Dyes: On dark polyesters, the fabric’s own dye can “bleed” (migrate) through the transfer print during heating, staining your design.

💡 THE SOLUTION: Before ordering prints, ask your fabric supplier: “Does this fabric have any silicone-based or water-repellent finishes?” If you’re unsure, send a small piece to PridgeTex, and we will test it for free. A sample print and a wash test before production will save your entire batch.
4. How to Get an “Accurate” Price Quote
The question “How much is this print?” has no simple answer. The price depends on:
- Setup Cost: How many colors are in your design? (Screen-based prints require a separate screen for each color).
- Print Type: Is it a flat print or a 3D (high-density) print?
- Special Effects: Requests like reflective, gloss/matte, or non-slip will change the cost.
- Quantity: The per-piece cost drops as the order quantity increases.
- Consumption: The size of the print (how much ink it uses).
What to Tell Us for a Clear Quote:
- Your design (or at least the number of colors)
- The fabric type it will be applied to
- The order quantity (number of pieces)
- Any special effects (high-density, gloss, etc.)?

5. The Design File: What Does “Print-Ready” Mean?
“A small JPEG I got from the website” will not work. Print quality starts with file quality.
- The Best: Vector formats (.AI, .EPS, .PDF)
- Acceptable: High-resolution (300 dpi minimum) .PNG or .PSD
- Must Include: If you have specific brand colors, please provide the Pantone (PMS) color codes.
6. After You Order: Pressing and Final Checks
When the transfer films arrive, the job is half done. The other half is the pressing.
- Follow Instructions: You MUST follow the specific Heat – Time – Pressure instructions provided for each print type (Silicone, DTF, etc.).
- Test First: Before pressing your entire stock, do a test press on a sample or a scrap piece of fabric.
- Do Your Own Wash Test: Even though PridgeTex tests everything, your final confirmation—using your fabric and your heat press—is what prevents surprises. Always wash your own test sample before mass production.
